73 Das LATH wurde 1992 als Nachfolger des Athena Language Learning Project (ALLP) gegründet und besteht aus einem interdisziplinären Team (Computerspezialisten und Geisteswissenschaftlern). Janet Murray, die Direktorin, beschreibt das Ziel des LATH wie folgt: "to domesticate advanced technologies and put them on computing platforms that are accessible to schools for education, and to humanists for study and research" (News about information systems throughout MIT 10, 2, 1994).
74 Janet Murray betont die Wichtigkeit der Verbindung von Video und Text für den Fremdsprachenunterricht: "In language learning, for instance, it is desirable to present the student with the text or a film or video linked like subtitles to the running video. The linking must include alternate versions of the text, including key words, full transcript, and in some cases, translation or representation in alternate alphabets. The text itself must be hyperlinked to glossary and it is desirable to link the glosssary back again into the video, so that multiple examples of the same word or phrase can be shown. In working with this material, watching the film, stopping it, looking at the transcripts, backing up through the transcript to watch an earlier scene, using the glossary, students will not be aware of when they are using the text as pointer to the video and when they are using the video frame number as a pointer to the text. Both are necessary functions of the medium" (Murray 1992: 339).

77 Die Methoden des surrogate travel und der movie map basieren auf der Aspen Movie Map, die 1978 von Andrew Lippmann am MIT entwickelt wurde. Bei der Aspen Movie Map geht der Benutzer auf eine Reise durch die Stadt Aspen in Colorado. Nicholas Negroponte beschreibt sie wie folgt: "In 1978 the Aspen Movie Map was magic. You could look out of your side window, stop in front of a building (like the police station), go inside, have a conversation with the police chief, dial in different seasons, see buildings as they were forty years before, get guided tours, helicopter over maps, turn the city into animation, join a bar scene, and leave a trail like Ariadne’s thread to help you get back to where you started. Multimedia was born" (Negroponte 1995: 67).
